Sleep plays an essential role in humans for recovery, memory, mood, and brain maturation. When you don’t sleep or sleep very little, the risk of weight gain is higher. Thus, people who spend less than 5 hours nights have Double the risk of obesity.

In France, about 18% of people sleep less than six hours a night. We explain how lack of sleep leads to weight gain.

organism’s reaction

The body will react to the lack of sleep. This deficiency will be experienced as an assault. When the body is under physical or emotional stress, it saves energy by storing as many calories as possible and stops spending those that it absorbs. Thus, weight gain is promoted.

affected by hormones

Lack of sleep affects hormone production. Ghrelin, which prompts us to eat, increases, unlike leptin, which cuts the end and decreases. It upsets the balance between the production of these two hormones. So we feel more hungry and lose the feeling of satiety.

In addition, lack of sleep increases cortisol levels. This stress hormone tends to increase appetite and especially sugar cravings. We are easily tempted by high-calorie foods.

People who lack sleep also tend to prefer foods rich in fat over protein foods. Eating stimulates the release of orexin, the hormone that reduces fatigue. It is associated with reward-seeking eating behaviors in which food is not consumed to satisfy hunger, but instead to fill an emotional or psychological need. This will result in poor impulse control, increasing the tendency to consume more calories than necessary.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Surrey in the UK and published in the Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences sheds light on the link between poor sleep and the risk of obesity. Researchers have found that lack of sleep disrupts genes, including those involved in the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and fats, increasing the likelihood of obesity and diabetes.

Another risk factor is that staying awake increases the chances of eating and enhances the tendency to snack. To maintain tone, we tend to eat. And the calories burned while awake do not make up for those taken in due to fatigue and changes in metabolism.
